Reps Summons Zamfara, Benue Governors, Assembly Leaders

Date:

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has summoned the Governors of Zamfara and Benue States, alongside the leadership of their respective Houses of Assembly, to appear before it on Thursday, May 8, 2025.

Their invitation follows a petition submitted by a civil rights group, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, which urged the National Assembly to invoke its constitutional powers and take over the legislative functions of the two State Assemblies.

The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Mike Etaba, who signed the summons on behalf of the Committee, stated that the concerned parties are already aware of the allegations raised in the petition and are expected to present their defence before the Committee.

“Ours is to ensure that the rule of law is upheld at all times,” Hon. Etaba said. “This hearing presents a vital opportunity for the invited parties to speak clearly to the issues so that Nigerians can understand the realities on the ground. Anarchy will not be allowed to thrive in our democracy,” he added.

In a statement signed by Chooks Oko, Head, Media, Public Petitions Committee, the Committee insisted that the integrity of the democratic process must be preserved and that any constitutional breaches in the legislative arms of the affected states would be thoroughly examined.
