Sokoto Labour Union Halts Strike Plans Following Minimum Wage Deal

Date:

The Sokoto State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called off its planned strike following the state government’s agreement to implement the N70,000 minimum wage. The announcement was made by the state NLC Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Aliyu Jungle, during a press briefing over the weekend.

Jungle confirmed that the new wage, set to take effect in January 2024, would benefit legitimate council workers and teachers across Sokoto. He also expressed the union’s full support for the agreement reached with the state government, emphasizing that the implementation aligns with the broader goal of fostering development in the state.

Following a meeting with the union’s executives at the NLC Secretariat in Sokoto, Jungle assured that the NLC would collaborate with the state government to ensure the successful rollout of the minimum wage. This includes conducting screenings and verifications to ensure that only genuinely employed workers benefit from the wage increase.

“We are fully behind the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage announced by the state government, effective January 2025,” Jungle stated. “We will assist in the verification process to ensure it reaches the right workers.”

He also urged workers to remain patient and expressed confidence that the state government would unveil additional welfare packages to benefit the workforce.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto had previously announced the implementation date during the presentation of the 2025 state budget to the state Assembly, confirming that January 2025 would mark the official start of the new minimum wage.
