The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern warning to frozen food dealers, urging them to stop selling and distributing unregistered and prohibited products.
This caution was delivered during a one-day sensitisation programme held on Friday at Kado Fish Market in Abuja. Representing NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency’s FCT Director, Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, underscored the importance of supporting local farmers and producers by adhering to regulations.
Prof. Adeyeye reiterated NAFDAC’s dedication to eliminating the illegal production, distribution, and sale of unregistered food items, especially as the festive season approaches.
“This sensitisation programme aims to promote good storage and distribution practices in the market, as properly stored food products maintain their quality and safety before consumption,” she said. “We are here at Kado Fish Market, the largest fish market in North-Central Nigeria, to ensure that frozen chicken, fish, and meat are stored and handled appropriately.”
She urged market operators to prioritize purchasing locally manufactured and NAFDAC-registered products, warning that violators of the Federal Government’s ban on the importation of frozen chicken, turkey, and catfish would face strict sanctions.
The Chairman of the Frozen Food Sellers Association at Kado Fish Market, Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed, welcomed the initiative, pledging the association’s support for NAFDAC’s policies. He assured that members would comply with regulations to ensure public safety.
Mohammed, however, appealed to NAFDAC to enforce its rules with fairness and compassion to foster a collaborative approach.
