Massive Blaze Destroys Property at Idumota Spare Parts Market

Date:

A massive fire broke out at a spare parts market under the Idumota Bridge in Lagos State on Friday night, destroying property worth millions of naira.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident on Saturday, with Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency’s Permanent Secretary, stating that emergency teams were alerted around 10:20 p.m. on Friday.

According to the statement, LASEMA activated its emergency response teams from Lekki, Cappa, and the Command and Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, following distress calls received via the 767/112 toll-free emergency lines at 10:20 p.m.

Upon arrival at the scene by 10:55 p.m., the response teams discovered that several buildings housing shops selling car spare parts were completely engulfed by flames. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the destruction was extensive, with goods and property worth millions of naira lost to the inferno.

LASEMA’s Shark Response Team, Fire Unit, Tiger Response Team, along with personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service, worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures. Law enforcement agencies were also on-site to ensure public safety and manage the crowd.

Oke-Osanyintolu reassured the public that no casualties or injuries were reported from the incident. He also confirmed that “dampening down” operations had begun to extinguish the remaining flames, and efforts were underway to salvage valuable items from the affected shops.

Recovery operations are still ongoing, and the LASEMA teams continue working to fully extinguish the fire.
