Controversial Nigerian entertainer Speed Darlington has blamed tribalism for his recent loss to fellow artist Portable, following a widely publicized competition between the two.
In a live video streamed on his Instagram account today, Speed Darlington alleged that the outcome of the contest was influenced by ethnic bias, claiming that the Yoruba ethnic group controlled the decision-making process.
“All of you are doing like you don’t know there is tribalism in Nigeria. Yoruba is the judge, everything about Nigeria is captured by the Yoruba. That is why Portable won,” he said during the broadcast.
Though he did not specify the nature of the contest—whether musical, political, or entertainment-related—his comments have already sparked heated reactions on social media, with users divided over his remarks.
Portable, whose real name is Habeeb Okikiola, has not responded publicly to the accusation as of the time of filing this report.
The accusation adds another layer to the often tense and competitive dynamics within Nigeria’s entertainment industry, where artists frequently trade barbs and fan rivalries run deep.
Observers have cautioned against politicizing entertainment outcomes, noting that such claims could inflame ethnic tensions. Meanwhile, some fans have called on Speed Darlington to accept the result in good faith and focus on future projects.
The incident highlights ongoing conversations about identity, fairness, and representation in Nigeria’s public life—both in politics and pop culture.
