Oyo Mourns as Ex-Governor Olunloyo Passes On at 89

Date:

Former Governor of Oyo State and eminent technocrat, Chief Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, has passed away at the age of 89, just days before his 90th birthday.

His death was confirmed in a statement released on Sunday by Barrister Oladapo Ogunwusi, who conveyed the family’s grief and appreciation for the former governor’s legacy. Olunloyo died in the early hours of Sunday.

“With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo… a few days before his 90th birthday,” the statement read.

Olunloyo, who held the traditional titles of Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife, was a renowned mathematician, engineer, and statesman. Though his tenure as governor was brief — serving for only three months in 1983 before the military coup that ended the Second Republic — his influence extended far beyond politics.

He was the first Rector of both Ibadan Polytechnic and Kwara State Polytechnic, marking a significant contribution to Nigeria’s education sector. His wide-ranging career also saw him serve in various capacities as a technocrat, public servant, and academic.

Tributes have poured in since news of his death broke, with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, describing him as “a cerebral and patriotic leader” whose impact on the state and country will not be forgotten.

The family has appealed for privacy and public understanding as they begin preparations for a befitting burial for the elder statesman.

Dr. Olunloyo is remembered for his intellect, humility, and lifelong commitment to national development.
