The late Nigerian boxer, Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, who collapsed and died mid-fight at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Ghana, on Saturday, March 29, 2025, died from sudden cardiac arrest, according to preliminary autopsy results.
The findings were announced by Remi Aboderin, Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control and President of the West African Boxing Union, following a post-mortem conducted on Wednesday, April 2. The autopsy was ordered by a Ghanaian court as part of an investigation into the boxer’s sudden death.
“The preliminary post-mortem results indicate that Segun died from sudden cardiac arrest. But further investigation into his heart condition is required, and as a result, his body will not be released to Nigeria for burial until approximately two weeks,” Aboderin told newsmen.
Olanrewaju, 40, a former National and West African light-heavyweight champion, was engaged in an undercard bout against Ghanaian boxer John “Power” Mbanugu when he suddenly collapsed in the ring. The referee immediately halted the match and called for medical assistance.
Despite rapid intervention by medical personnel at the venue, the veteran boxer was pronounced dead shortly after collapsing.
His death has sent shockwaves through the boxing community in Nigeria and West Africa, with tributes pouring in from fellow athletes, fans, and sporting authorities. Many described him as a fierce competitor and dedicated athlete who left a lasting mark on the sport.
The boxing authorities have urged athletes to undergo thorough health screenings, especially for heart-related conditions, as the investigation into Olanrewaju’s medical history continues.
His remains are expected to be released and repatriated to Nigeria in the coming weeks following the conclusion of the ongoing inquiry.
