The Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Enoh, on Thursday has reaffirmed the commitment of the federal government towards creating an enabling environment for investments in the country’s automotive industry.
Enoh, who said this while receiving a delegation from Volkswagen Group Africa in Abuja, also expressed optimism that the partnership with Volkswagen Group Africa would catalyse the transformation of Nigeria’s automotive sector into a globally competitive industry.
The delegation was on a working visit to discuss the future of Nigeria’s automotive industry.“The automotive industry is a cornerstone of industrialisation, and Nigeria is poised to become the ‘Detroit of Africa.’ With the zeal and commitment of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, we are implementing measures to meet local demands, enhance market competitiveness, and ensure that Nigerians can access these products through fair credit facilities,” he said.
He also commended the team`s innovative approach, expressing confidence in Nigeria’s potential to emerge as a leading automotive hub through judicious use of its vast resources and strategic positioning.
On his part, the Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Joseph Osanipin commended Volkswagen Group Africa as a leading force in the automotive industry across the continent. He noted their success in South Africa, particularly with the production of the Polo brand, and expressed optimism about the potential for similar achievements in Nigeria.
Mr. Michael Petrie, Head of Strategic Plant Development for Volkswagen Group Africa, outlined the company’s long-term vision for re-entering the Nigerian market. He emphasised Volkswagen’s strong identity and commitment to building a robust manufacturing footprint in Nigeria.
According to him, Nigeria represents a massive market with untapped potential and the Volkswagen Group focus is on establishing brand credibility, increasing production capacity, and creating a value chain that enhances mobility and flexibility for Nigerians.
The delegation included Mr. Joseph Osanipin, Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC); Mr. Michael Petrie, Head of Strategic Plant Development, Volkswagen Group Africa; and Chrystal Christian, Head of Sub-Saharan Operations, Volkswagen Group Africa.
