Some factions within the Kwankwasiyya political movement have outlined conditions under which they would abandon the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and align with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf amid deepening divisions within the party.
The groups’ position emerged as political realignments intensified following Yusuf’s decision to exit the NNPP, a development that has triggered consultations among Kwankwasiyya loyalists across Kano State.
In his resignation letter, Governor Yusuf said:
“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party of my decision to resign my membership of the party, with effect from Friday, 23rd January 2026.”
The governor cited internal crises and the need to safeguard the broader interest of Kano residents as reasons for his decision.
Meanwhile, leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, urged his supporters to remain steadfast amid the unfolding political developments, warning against being swayed by inducements.
“Our presence here today is based on ideology. If we had allowed greed to guide us, we would have been bought with money long ago,” he said while addressing Kwankwasiyya groups in Kano.
Sources within the movement say consultations are ongoing, with some groups indicating readiness to follow Governor Yusuf’s political direction only if clear ideological and political guarantees are secured.
The development underscores the widening rift within the Kwankwasiyya movement and the NNPP, as Kano’s political landscape continues to shift ahead of future electoral contests.
