Haydun Montessori School, located in Irepo Estate along Igando Road, joined millions around the world on Friday to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child, an annual observance declared by the United Nations to promote girls’ rights and gender equality.
The colourful event saw parents exchange gifts through their children as a gesture of love, unity, and shared commitment to empowering the girl child. The occasion also highlighted the global call to create more opportunities for girls and address the inequalities they face in access to education, healthcare, nutrition, legal rights, and protection from discrimination and violence.
Speaking during the event, the school’s proprietress, Mrs. Ayodeji A. Adekoya, delivered an inspiring speech themed “Empowering Girls, Shaping the Future.” She emphasized the importance of nurturing young girls to become confident leaders capable of transforming society.
“Today, we celebrate International Day of the Girl Child, a global initiative to recognize the potential and challenges of girls worldwide,” she said. “As a school, we believe in empowering our girls to dream big, lead boldly, and shape a brighter future.”
Mrs. Adekoya further urged parents and educators to create a safe and supportive environment where girls can thrive and break barriers. She concluded her address with a famous quote from Marilyn Monroe:
“Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.”
The International Day of the Girl Child, first observed on October 11, 2012, continues to serve as a platform to amplify girls’ voices and advocate for their rights globally.
At Haydun Montessori, the day ended on a joyful note — with laughter, shared gifts, and renewed commitment to raising empowered and confident young girls ready to make a difference in their communities and beyond.
