FG Cancels Independence Day Parade as Nigeria Marks 65th Anniversary

Date:

The Federal Government has cancelled the parade earlier scheduled to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

The announcement, made on Monday through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, noted that the decision does not diminish the significance of the milestone. A statement signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, explained that other anniversary activities would continue as planned, including the presidential broadcast, cultural programmes and the National Campus Debate finale.

At a world press conference in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, described Independence Day as a time for sober reflection and renewed patriotism, stressing the year’s theme, “Nigeria at 65: All Hands-on Deck for a Greater Nation.”

“Independence Day is a profound opportunity for us to reflect on how far we have come as a people, celebrate our resilience, and renew our commitment to unity, peace, and progress,” Akume said. He praised President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that ongoing reforms, though difficult, are laying the foundation for sustainable growth and economic stability.

The SGF urged Nigerians to rise above political, ethnic and religious divides, adding, “At 65, Nigeria is still a work in progress. But with renewed hope, shared responsibility and collective resolve, our best days lie ahead.”

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the anniversary as “a monumental commemoration,” likening the number 65 to sapphire—a symbol of loyalty, truth and wisdom. He commended Tinubu’s leadership in driving reforms across taxation, education, infrastructure, energy, oil and gas, solid minerals, agriculture and healthcare.

Idris added that Nigeria continues to play a key role in Africa through peacekeeping, regional stability efforts and global engagement.

Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, and has traditionally marked the anniversary with parades, official addresses and religious services.
