Arise TV Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu Killed in Abuja Robbery

A news anchor and producer with Arise Television, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, was killed in the early hours of Monday during an armed robbery at her residence in the Katampe district of Abuja.

The tragic incident, confirmed in a statement by Arise TV’s management and signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi, has prompted the Nigeria Police to commence investigations.

“Sommie, 29, tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police,” the statement read.

Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu was not only a prominent face on television but also a trained lawyer. Arise TV described her as “a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with viewers” and “a supportive colleague and friend.”

The management expressed deep sorrow over her death, commiserating with her parents, siblings, extended family, colleagues, and friends.

“Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits,” the statement added.

Maduagwu, fondly called Sommie by colleagues and friends, joined Arise TV as a news anchor and producer, earning recognition for her professionalism and on-air charisma.

The Nigeria Police have not yet released further details on the robbery or arrests, but security sources confirmed that the case has been escalated due to its sensitivity and public attention.

Her death has sparked grief across Nigeria’s media industry, with tributes pouring in on social media from colleagues, friends, and viewers who remembered her as a rising star in journalism.
