Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has been elected Vice Chair of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for 2025, marking the country’s first leadership position on the global ICT policy-making body in almost five decades.
The announcement was made on Tuesday following Tijani’s endorsement by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His appointment places Nigeria at the forefront of international digital diplomacy and reinforces its rising influence in global tech governance.
“It is a profound honour,” Tijani said in his acceptance remarks. “I look forward to working closely with the Council Chair, Ms. Cristiana Flutur, and fellow Council members to advance our shared mission of inclusive digital development.”
The ITU Council, comprising 48 member states, serves as the governing body for the UN’s specialized agency on information and communication technologies (ICTs). It plays a vital role in shaping policies around connectivity, cybersecurity, and digital inclusion—issues central to Nigeria’s own digital transformation drive.
As Vice Chair, Tijani is expected to lead strategic discussions on resilient digital infrastructure, equitable access to technology, and trusted digital public systems. He pledged to align his efforts with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu, which prioritizes expanded connectivity, youth digital skills development, and inclusive innovation.
Tijani emphasized that his new international role will allow Nigeria to champion “global collaboration around meaningful access, cybersecurity, and digital literacy,” while also advocating for infrastructure development in underserved regions.
The election comes at a time when the ITU is intensifying efforts to connect the remaining 2.6 billion people worldwide who remain offline. ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin said Council members, including Tijani, are now “on the front lines of digital diplomacy,” working to ensure “a better digital future for all.”
This is Nigeria’s first high-level position on the ITU Council in nearly 50 years.
The ITU has led global ICT policy for over 160 years and is a key player in UN-led digital cooperation.
The 2025 Council will focus on digital inclusion, secure innovation, and building momentum for transformative technology.
Nigeria’s leadership in the ITU aligns with its increasing presence in global discussions on artificial intelligence, data governance, and digital health.
Tijani’s elevation underscores Nigeria’s growing voice in shaping global digital policy and its commitment to fostering an inclusive, innovative digital economy both at home and abroad.
