The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed allegations by former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, who claimed a powerful cabal has taken control of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a sharp rebuttal, APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru questioned Dalung’s credibility and track record, saying, “Who is Dalung? What was his scorecard when he served as a minister? He clearly lacks the intellectual depth to engage in matters of governance.”
Dalung had told The PUNCH that he foresaw this development even before Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29, 2023, alleging that the President had not been fully in control of his government from the start. He claimed the government was hijacked by a “sophisticated cabal” and cited the controversial removal of fuel subsidies on inauguration day as an example of decisions made without a full cabinet in place.
According to Dalung, this move led to soaring fuel prices and increased living costs, describing himself as a modern-day prophet Jeremiah lamenting the current situation. He also argued that while former President Buhari’s administration had an inexperienced cabal, Tinubu’s is composed of “experienced, cunning, and highly ambitious individuals” who are more manipulative and sophisticated.
However, Basiru rejected these assertions, stating, “What cabal is he talking about when the National Assembly is there? His analysis is not only lazy but also devoid of substance. It’s hard to dignify such ignorance with a serious response.” He accused Dalung and other critics of being unable to move on from their 2023 election defeat and of deliberately undermining the government’s efforts.
Basiru reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to progress and urged detractors to engage through democratic processes. “As Mr President has made clear, we will not be distracted by armchair critics. Those who are dissatisfied should meet us at the ballot box,” he said.
The APC’s response underscores the ruling party’s determination to focus on governance amid criticism from former insiders and political commentators.
