JUSUN Suspends Planned Nationwide Strike for Two Weeks

Date:

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has suspended its planned nationwide strike for two weeks, providing a temporary reprieve for court operations across the country.

The industrial action, initially set to commence on Monday, June 2, was put on hold following the intervention of the Minister of Labour and other key judiciary stakeholders. The union announced the suspension in a statement issued on Sunday by Mr. Joel Ebiloma, Public Relations Officer of the JUSUN National Judicial Council (NJC) Chapter.

According to the statement, a series of meetings were held over the weekend involving federal judiciary representatives, officials from the Ministry of Labour, and other stakeholders. The engagements were initiated under the directive of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, to prevent disruption of court proceedings.

As part of the resolution, the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation has been given a two-week deadline to release statutory allocations in line with the 2025 Appropriation Act. This includes payment of arrears of the Wage Award, minimum wage adjustments, and the 25%/35% salary increment for judiciary workers.

“Following the circular announcing industrial action…a series of meetings were convened,” the JUSUN statement read. “After extensive deliberations, NJC JUSUN is working tirelessly to resolve all outstanding issues.”

The union directed all judiciary workers under the federal structure to resume work on Monday, June 2, as discussions continue to secure financial commitments from the government.

JUSUN also acknowledged the efforts of NJC Secretary Malam Ahmed Gambo Saleh, expressing confidence that the pending issues would be resolved within the agreed timeframe.

“We commend the patience, courage, and understanding of all our respected members during this struggle,” the union said. “We are confident that with the dedication and zeal demonstrated…the required funds will be released…and we shall all have cause to celebrate our collective victory.”
