FRSC Blames Speeding, Fatigue for 21 Kano Athletes Death

Date:

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attributed the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 21 Kano State athletes and officials to excessive speed and driver fatigue.

The fatal crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday near Gadar Yankifi along the Kaduna-Kano expressway. The victims were returning from the 2024 National Sports Festival in Abeokuta when their Kano State Government coaster bus (registration number KN 041 A17) veered off the road.

According to a statement from FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, the bus was carrying 24 passengers—23 men and one woman. While three, including the lone female passenger, sustained injuries and were hospitalized, 21 male adults were confirmed dead at the scene.

The deceased, members of Team Kano, included athletes from wrestling and kickboxing, journalists, sports officials, medical personnel, and drivers. One of the victims was identified as Imam Umar Fagge, a football referee and younger brother to the acting chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission.

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, expressing deep sorrow, noted that the crash likely resulted from driver fatigue and speeding following a long overnight journey. He urged fleet operators to enforce driver rest periods and emphasized caution during night travels when visibility is poor.

President Bola Tinubu described the loss as a “devastating blow to the nation,” mourning the young talents and promising swift measures to improve transport safety standards nationwide.

“This tragedy casts a shadow over the National Sports Festival, a celebration of unity, talent, and excellence,” Tinubu said through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun also expressed grief, saying, “These were young people, budding stars who had so much to offer Nigeria.”

Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, said the state was “devastated” by the loss, offering prayers and condolences to the families of the deceased.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar wrote on social media, “I am heartbroken… These young men and women represent the very best of our nation—dedicated, talented, and full of promise.”

In response, the National Sports Commission (NSC) announced immediate policy changes, including mandatory insurance coverage for all athletes and officials, and mechanical certification for all vehicles used during national events.

Director of Press Dr Kehinde Ajayi, in a statement, said these measures would help prevent future tragedies.

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade both expressed profound sorrow, stating that the sports community was in mourning just days after celebrating the success of the Gateway Games 2024.

“Our hearts are with the people of Kano State at this sad time,” said Dikko. “This loss has dealt a heavy blow to Nigerian sports.”
