Abiodun Mourns 21 Kano Athletes Killed in Tragic Road Crash After NSF

Date:

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kano State following the tragic death of 21 athletes who were returning from the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival hosted in Ogun State.

The athletes, part of the Kano State contingent, lost their lives in a fatal accident at Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area, approximately 50 kilometres from Kano after passing through Kaduna State. The bus conveying them was said to have crashed, resulting in one of the deadliest road tragedies involving young sportsmen and women in recent memory.

In a statement released from Abeokuta on Saturday, Governor Abiodun said the news left him “completely traumatised,” adding that the athletes were vibrant young Nigerians who had proudly represented Kano State at the just concluded Gateway 2024 games.

“It is indeed saddening and distressing that 21 gallant athletes who had represented Kano State at the just concluded Gateway 2024 games have lost their lives in the most traumatizing and most painful circumstances,” the governor said.

He described the deceased as budding talents with bright futures, whose patriotism and commitment to national unity would not be forgotten.

“These were young people, budding stars who had a lot to give the country with their talent, skills, and creativity. It is tragic that their families, who were eagerly awaiting their return, will never see them again,” Abiodun said.

The governor also offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased and asked for divine strength for their families, friends, and colleagues during this period of grief.

“I commiserate with His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and his cabinet, the chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Bala Fagge, and the people of Kano State over this most tragic and most unfortunate incident. May we never witness this kind of incident again,” the statement read.

The 22nd National Sports Festival, also known as Gateway 2024, had recently concluded in Ogun State with athletes from across the federation participating in various competitions. The accident casts a dark shadow over what had been a celebration of youth, unity, and athletic excellence.
