Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen ended his season with Galatasaray in memorable fashion, scoring in the 81st minute to seal a 2-0 victory over Başakşehir in the Turkish Champions’ final league game of the campaign.
Osimhen was rested in Galatasaray’s previous league match against Göztepe but returned to the starting XI for what turned out to be a remarkable farewell, marking the end of a successful loan stint in Turkey for the Nigerian striker.
Galatasaray started the game on the front foot and earned a penalty in the 15th minute after Ousseynou Ba was penalised for a handball in the box.
Osimhen passed up the chance to score and allowed Dries Mertens — who was also making his final appearance for the club — to take the spot kick, which he converted to give Galatasaray a 1-0 lead.
Despite Başakşehir’s solid defensive effort and multiple saves from goalkeeper Muhammed Sengezer to keep Galatasaray at bay, they couldn’t keep Victor Osimhen quiet, as the Nigerian striker headed in Kaan Ayhan’s pinpoint cross to double the hosts’ lead and seal the victory.
The goal took Victor Osimhen’s league tally to 26 for the season, virtually guaranteeing him the Golden Boot as the top scorer, with a five-goal cushion over his closest rival, Krzysztof Piatek.
In all competitions, the Nigerian striker recorded 37 goals and seven assists.
The win marked Galatasaray’s 30th of the league campaign, lifting them to 95 points.
On the other hand, Başakşehir finished the season in fifth place, earning a spot in next season’s UEFA Europa Conference League.
Victor Osimhen’s standout performance once again highlights his remarkable season with Galatasaray, having already secured the Turkish Cup and the Super Lig title, while being all but certain to claim both the league’s Player of the Season and Golden Boot awards.
