MASSOB Sit-at-Home Order Grounds Economic Activities in Imo

Date:

Economic activities in Imo State were brought to a halt on Friday as residents complied with a sit-at-home order issued by the separatist group, Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).

Markets, schools, banks, and private offices remained shut throughout the day, while roads in and around Owerri, the state capital, were largely deserted. Only a few commercial vehicles were seen operating, and many residents stayed indoors out of fear or solidarity.

The development follows a long-standing pattern of civil obedience observed in parts of the South-East, often driven by orders from pro-Biafra groups to protest perceived injustices against the region.

The mass shutdown is the latest in a series of such actions that continue to disrupt economic and social life in the South-East, despite calls from leaders for a return to normalcy.

Recent appeals by governors and security agencies have done little to sway public behavior, as many citizens continue to comply with sit-at-home directives, either voluntarily or due to fear of reprisal attacks.

Public reactions have been mixed, with some residents expressing frustration over the recurring disruptions, while others believe the protest action is a necessary expression of regional grievances.

More details are expected to emerge as the state government and security officials respond to the latest lockdown.
