The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has summoned controversial musician Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, for questioning over alleged sexual misconduct involving a minor.
The summons, dated May 28, 2025, was made public on Thursday, following widespread outrage over a viral Instagram Live video in which Speed Darlington allegedly admitted to having sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl. He claimed the incident happened about a decade ago, adding graphic details that sparked widespread condemnation.
In an official letter, NAPTIP cited possible violations of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act (TIPPEA) 2015 and the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015, urging the artist to appear at its headquarters in Abuja on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m., accompanied by legal counsel or any relevant documentation.
“Failure to honour this invitation may result in further legal action,” the two-page summons warned.
According to the agency, the viral video and other resurfaced content featured Speed Darlington making remarks that could amount to self-incrimination. The agency’s Cyber Crime Response Team is currently investigating the material.
NAPTIP stated:
“These actions, if substantiated, constitute offences under the TIPPEA and Cybercrime Acts. Your cooperation is critical to ensuring a fair and thorough inquiry.”
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) initially received reports of the video but escalated the matter to NAPTIP after jurisdictional challenges due to the unspecified location of the alleged offence.
In response to the backlash, Speed Darlington claimed the statement was part of a “publicity stunt” to promote his upcoming music release. He later apologised, saying he did not intend to cause distress or harm.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from rights groups and the public, with many calling for a full investigation and appropriate legal action. Media personality Uriel Oputa was among several public figures who condemned the artist for allegedly trivialising a serious offence.
NAPTIP reaffirmed its commitment to protecting minors and ensuring accountability in cases of child exploitation, urging the public to report suspicious activities and support their efforts in safeguarding children’s rights.
