Five Admission Options for Candidates with Low JAMB Scores

Date:

For many Nigerian students, scoring below 180 in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam can feel like the end of their university dreams. However, there are several alternative admission pathways available to those who do not meet the traditional cut-off scores, providing multiple opportunities to pursue higher education.

Here are five proven alternatives for candidates with low JAMB scores seeking admission into Nigerian universities:

1. Diploma Programmes

Diploma courses, typically lasting two years, are offered by universities and polytechnics and focus on practical skills in areas such as Business Administration, Mass Communication, and Engineering. Importantly, these programs do not require high JAMB scores and can increase the chance of gaining direct entry into 200 level upon completion.

2. JUPEB/Foundation Courses

The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) program is a one-year intensive course that allows students to gain direct entry admission into 200 level in over 40 Nigerian universities. This program does not require UTME results and offers focused academic preparation in a student’s chosen field.

3. Pre-degree/Remedial Programmes

Universities offer pre-degree or remedial courses, usually lasting six to twelve months, to help students improve their academic qualifications. Successful completion of these programs can enhance the chances of gaining admission in subsequent academic sessions and provide a foundational start to university education.

4. Part-time/Weekend Degree Programmes

Designed for working individuals or students requiring flexible study schedules, many Nigerian universities offer part-time or weekend degree programs. These courses often have more lenient admission requirements, sometimes not requiring JAMB scores at all, and entry is usually based on O’Level results and internal examinations.

5. Direct Entry (For ND/NCE Holders)

Candidates with National Diploma (ND), National Certificate in Education (NCE), or IJMB/JUPEB qualifications can apply for Direct Entry admission into 200 level. This pathway bypasses the UTME entirely and allows students to build on their existing academic achievements in various fields, including education, science, and management.

These alternative routes provide hope and practical options for students who score low on the JAMB exam but remain committed to pursuing their academic goals. By exploring these programs, candidates can still find a path to university education and future career success.
