The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has approved the reconstitution of a Caretaker Committee for the National Sports Association for Judiciary (NASAJ), following a leadership crisis that recently disrupted the body’s unity and operations.
Appointed to lead the new committee is Mohammed Suleiman, who currently serves as the Head of Audit and Investigation at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. The CJN’s decision comes in response to a breakdown in NASAJ’s leadership that resulted in the controversial staging of the CJN Cup in both Delta and Minna simultaneously — a development that exposed deep divisions within the association’s National Executive Committee and congress.
Other members of the newly appointed committee include Ibrahim Isah Awak of the Federal High Court, Alkali Abraham Ahmed from the National Judicial Institute, Aliyu Mamuda, Abdulrafiu Masa representing the Federal Judicial Service Commission, Mathew Umaru from the Court of Appeal, Solomon Isah of the FCT High Court, and Garba Sudan from the Supreme Court.
The CJN tasked the committee with the immediate responsibility of resolving the ongoing internal disputes and facilitating fresh elections to usher in a new, unified leadership.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on behalf of the Chief Registrar, Mr. Reuben Jego, Deputy Chief Registrar I of the Supreme Court, urged the committee to act swiftly and decisively in restoring order and credibility to the association.
The reconstitution of the committee is seen as a critical step toward stabilising NASAJ, which plays a key role in promoting sports and wellness among judicial officers and staff across the country.
