Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi has lauded his teammates, coaches, and backroom staff for their vital roles in his inclusion in the Best XI of the just-concluded U-20 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt.
The 19-year-old defender, who was instrumental in helping Nigeria clinch the bronze medal, described the recognition as a significant milestone in his young career, but was quick to deflect the spotlight onto the collective effort of the team.
“It’s a truly beautiful achievement and it means a lot to me,” Bameyi said.
“Going into such a major tournament like the U-20 AFCON and being recognised as one of the outstanding players can go a long way in shaping my career positively.”
The Bayelsa United standout featured prominently throughout Nigeria’s campaign and was one of only a few non-finalists to earn a place in the tournament’s Best XI—dominated by eventual champions South Africa, who had four players in the lineup.
Bameyi, however, was quick to stress that individual accolades are secondary to team achievements.
“Beyond me, I honestly believe the real champions are my brothers—my teammates.
“Full credit should go to them, as well as to our coaches and the entire backroom staff.
Everyone gave everything for the team’s success, and I deeply appreciate their efforts.”
Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey in Egypt, Bameyi acknowledged that while the team fell short of their ultimate goal, the tournament provided a platform for growth and valuable experience ahead of the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
“Although things did not go exactly as we had planned, we still give glory to God,” he said.
“It was a wonderful tournament, not just for me, but also for my teammates, my brothers.”
Looking ahead to the global stage, Bameyi emphasised the need for improvement and adaptability.
“The situation demands improvement. We must continue to grow and evolve positively.
“That means we need to work hard and make the necessary adjustments, because we are now heading to a bigger stage, the global stage.”
The young skipper expressed confidence in the team’s physical and mental readiness for the World Cup, adding that organisation and preparation will be key.
“We are mentally strong and physically fit. What remains now is for us to return home, go into camp, and organise ourselves properly.
“If we do that, I believe we can achieve a positive outcome at the World Cup.”
Bameyi also shared his long-term ambition to feature at the senior level for the Super Eagles and to represent Nigeria on the biggest stages.
“I hope to not only play for top clubs but also to proudly represent this great nation at senior level with the Super Eagles.
“There’s something deeply fulfilling about fighting for and defending your country at every level.”
With maturity beyond his years and leadership on and off the pitch, Daniel Bameyi’s star continues to rise—and so does the optimism surrounding Nigeria’s U-20 setup.
