Salah Named Premier League Player of the Season for Second Time

Date:

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been named Premier League Player of the Season for the second time after playing a pivotal role in Red’s historic march to their 20th English league title.

Salah secured the award after netting 28 league goals — five more than any other player — and providing 18 assists throughout the season. Heading into Liverpool’s final game against FA Cup winners Crystal Palace, the 32-year-old star is just two assists shy of the single-season record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

The prestigious award is decided through a combination of public votes and input from a panel of football experts. Salah first won the accolade in the 2017-18 season, breaking a recent streak dominated by Manchester City players who claimed the title for four consecutive seasons.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, who recently signed a new contract with the club, was the last non-Manchester City player to win the award in the 2018-19 campaign. Van Dijk was among the contenders Salah surpassed in the voting, alongside Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch, Arsenal’s Declan Rice, Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, and Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood.

Earlier this month, Salah also clinched the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year award, securing nearly 90 percent of the votes — the largest margin of victory in this century.

Salah’s outstanding performance this season has not only reinforced his status as one of the Premier League’s greatest but also highlighted his crucial contribution to Liverpool’s return to the pinnacle of English football.
