Felix Agu Cleared to Play for Super Eagles

Date:

Felix Agu has officially been cleared by FIFA to represent Nigeria at the international level, following confirmation from the German Football Federation (DFB) that the Werder Bremen defender has never played in an official competitive match for Germany at senior or youth level.

The 24-year-old, who features regularly in the Bundesliga, had previously made two appearances for Germany’s U-21 side in friendly matches back in 2019.

Those appearances, however, do not tie him to Germany under FIFA eligibility rules.

Agu had been invited to train with the Super Eagles ahead of the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in London, but was yet to join the team camp before this latest development officially cleared the path for him to don the green and white of Nigeria.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) welcomed the decision, noting it as a strategic move to strengthen the national team’s defensive ranks.

“Welcome Felix!” the NFF wrote in a celebratory post on social media, confirming the clearance.

With doubts over his eligibility now removed, Agu is in line to make his debut for Nigeria as early as Wednesday evening, when the Super Eagles face Ghana’s Black Stars at the Gtech Community Stadium in Brentford as part of the Unity Cup tournament.

This development is seen as a significant win for Nigeria as the national team prepares for crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers later this year.

Securing dual-national players like Agu is part of an ongoing effort by the NFF to bolster the Super Eagles’ depth with top talent from across Europe.
