Ashe disqualified as Ezeakor, Odumosu Claim 100m Titles at National Sports Festival

Date:

In a dramatic finish at the 2024 National Sports Festival held at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Chidera Ezeakor of Edo State claimed the men’s 100m title with a time of 10.27secs on Saturday.

He had earlier ran a Personal Best of 10.22s in the semi-finals.

Ezeakor edged out Enoch Adegoke, Tokyo 2020 Olympic finalist, to secure a thrilling 1-2 finish for Edo State.

Taiwo James of Rivers State completed the podium by finishing third.

The race was marked by controversy after Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth bronze medallist Favour Ashe was disqualified for lining up with incomplete bibs, much to the disappointment of fans.

Athletes are meant to have two bibs for the race; one for the front part of the vest, and another for the back.

Despite his pleas to be allowed to run, he was disqualified from the final.

In the women’s event, Kate Odumosu from Delta State clinched the title with a time of 11.43secs, showcasing her dominance on the track.

The 2024 National Sports Festival continues to provide a platform for Nigeria’s best athletes to showcase their talents ahead of international competitions.
