As part of efforts to control the erosion and flood troubling some parts of Imo State, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere representing Ideato North/South has vowed to ensure the completion of works on the construction of drainages in some parts of Imo State ravaged by environmental disasters.Rep. Ugochinyere made the remarks within the week when he flagged off the construction of a 1.2km hydraulic drainage project in Ugwuano, Ozuomee, Urualla communities of the state.
Recall, the lawmaker, at different fora raised alarm on the worsening condition of the gully erosion in different communities in his constituency, adding that they pose a threat to lives and properties.
Speaking on the construction of the new drainage lines, the lawmaker said the infrastructure will take the erosion run-off down to the Urashi River, as well as open link roads thereby making them motorable for farmers and other users.
He said, “My intervention measures to construct 1.2km new drainage just to redirect the water that is causing the heavy flood that is threatening or about to cut the only link road. I am channeling the water once I finish the drainage directly to Orashi river thereby stopping the continued worsening of the erosion while seeking and calling on the federal government, ministry of works, NDDC, and the state government to intervene and find a lasting solution.
The work which took off this week will run non-stop until the new drainage down to Orashi is completed. I made the promise when I visited the community a few weeks ago and now I am doing it like I did to the Umuchima gully erosion.”
