Quadri Aruna’s valiant run at the 2025 ITTF World Championships in Doha came to an end on Thursday, May 22, following a fourth-round defeat to Brazil’s Hugo Calderano.
In what was billed as one of the tournament’s standout clashes, the encounter at Lusail Arena fell short of expectations, as Calderano delivered a masterclass in control and precision.
The South American star dispatched Aruna in straight sets, 4-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-4, 11-6), to secure his place in the quarterfinals.
Calderano’s tactical brilliance was evident throughout the 22-minute contest.
He neutralised Aruna’s trademark forehand power by forcing backhand exchanges, an area where the Nigerian struggled to gain ground.
Despite strategic advice and vocal encouragement from his coaching team, Aruna was unable to disrupt the Brazilian’s rhythm, committing a series of unforced errors that compounded his woes.
The match highlighted Calderano’s elite technique, especially his blistering backhand and explosive forehand topspin, which repeatedly earned him quick points and maintained the pressure on Aruna.
Nevertheless, the 36-year-old Nigerian departs Doha with his head held high.
Aruna once again etched his name into the history books by becoming the first African to reach the Round of 16 at the ITTF World Championships twice—his previous best being a quarterfinal finish in Houston in 2021.
This year, he stood as the continent’s sole representative among the final 16, a testament to his enduring excellence and influence on the sport.
In his post-match comments, Calderano acknowledged Aruna’s reputation and the challenge he poses:”It’s never easy to stay at the same level in every competition, especially after winning the ITTF World Cup last month.
“I had to take some rest and resume training, focused, because table tennis is unpredictable. Against someone like Aruna, you always have to be at your best,” Calderano said.
While Aruna’s journey ends in Doha, his legacy continues to inspire a generation of African players. His resilience, skill, and trailblazing achievements remain a source of immense pride for Nigeria and the entire continent.
