The Senate has called for the establishment of a Military base in Hong Local Government Area of Borno State for reinforcement to the existing personnel of the Nigerian Army and other sister security.
This is coming on the heels of incidences of successive Boko Haram attacks on communities in Hong Local Government area which left thousands of innocent people homeless and displaced.
In a motion of urgent national importance brought by Senator Aminu Abass (PDP, Adamawa Central) and other North East Senators the, Senate directed National Emergency Management Agency to provide relief materials to cushion the effects of the attacks on the affected communities.
Abass noted that the neighbouring Gombi LGA has as well been under the Boko Haram attacks since January this year leaving scores dead.
According to him, the resurgence of the Boko Haram activities cut across the North-Eastern states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa.
He was worried that the unfortunate activities of Boko Haram affect the economic activities of the affected areas and, by extension, the whole region and the country at large saying people in the affected areas no longer go to the farms or normal trading activities.
He said if not proactively checked, the Boko Haram insurgency is capable of spreading to wider communities in the North and beyond.
The Senate Chief Whip, Senator Tahir Monguno in his contribution noted that the reason why the insurgence reoccurred was because the military resources in the North East were diverted to the North West to address the issue of insecurity affecting the region.
He said but for the gallant intervention of the military he wouldn’t have been able to have access to his home in Borno State after being restricted to Abuja for several years.
The Senate President Godswill Akpabio while adopting the motion commended the sponsors and the co-sponsors of the motion and encourage the military to intensify the efforts of addressing insecurities in the region.
