Prof. Obi warns Nigerians to Avoid Self-Diagnosing High Blood Pressure

Date:

The Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ikechukwu Obi, has cautioned the public against self-diagnosing hypertension, warning that a single blood pressure reading is not sufficient to determine the condition. He gave the warning on Sunday during the conclusion of a three-day awareness rally to mark the 2025 World Hypertension Day in Enugu.

Organised in partnership with Population Services International (PSI), the rally aimed to educate residents on the dangers of uncontrolled high blood pressure and the importance of accurate and routine monitoring.

Prof. Obi emphasized that only clinically supervised and repeated blood pressure checks can confirm a diagnosis of hypertension.

“If it were not clinically determined in a healthcare facility, do not accept the diagnosis of hypertension or high blood pressure because one measurement of blood pressure is not enough,” he said.

This year’s World Hypertension Day theme — “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer” — underscores the importance of consistent and accurate monitoring for long-term health.

The commissioner disclosed that globally, hypertension affects about 1.28 billion people, nearly half of whom are unaware of their condition. This lack of awareness, he warned, could result in severe complications such as heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage, and vision loss.

“Uncontrolled hypertension is a silent but deadly condition. Without proper diagnosis and treatment, it can claim lives or cause irreversible organ damage,” Prof. Obi stated.

He reiterated that diagnosing hypertension requires multiple measurements taken at calculated intervals and confirmed by additional tests under medical supervision.

Prof. Obi also commended PSI Nigeria and other partners for supporting the state’s efforts in hypertension control and management.

“PSI Nigeria has played a significant role in helping us carry out regular blood pressure checks in our healthcare facilities. Their contribution is deeply appreciated,” he added.

The commissioner concluded by urging citizens to take responsibility for their health through regular checkups and medical consultations.

“Please, members of the general public should take note: one measurement of your blood pressure is not a diagnosis of hypertension. Seek confirmation from a qualified healthcare provider,” he advised.

The awareness rally is part of Enugu State’s broader efforts to combat non-communicable diseases and promote preventive healthcare across communities.
