Wike Unveils Plans For Bus Terminals in Gwagwalada, Bwari To Tackle Insecurity, Decongest City

Date:

In a move aimed at curbing insecurity and improving transportation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has announced plans to establish modern bus terminals in Gwagwalada and Bwari, alongside existing ones in Mabushi, Kugbo, and the central business district.

The terminals, he said, are part of the renewed efforts to make commuting safer and more organized for residents, especially those in satellite towns.

Speaking during an inspection of an ongoing 12-Kilometres road project linking the entire Ushafa community, Wike said : “We have agreed that we’re going to establish one in Gwagwalada and one in Bwari, so that people can board buses or taxis directly to the city from Bwari to Mabushi, Kugbo or the central business area,” Wike stated during a project inspection tour.

He emphasized that the initiative will drastically reduce the menace of “one chance” criminal activities and restore confidence in public transportation.

“By the time we’ve done that, people will be safe, people will be secured. If after that someone chooses to wait on the road, then that’s no longer the government’s problem. We would have done our part,” he said.

Wike also revealed that several major infrastructure projects are now nearing completion across the FCT, and will be commissioned in alignment with the second anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

“We believe that by the first week of June, by the grace of God, we’ll begin commissioning. Some will be done by Mr. President himself, especially key projects in both the cities and satellite towns,” he disclosed.

The Minister expressed optimism that the commissioning activities will commence shortly after the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

“I’ve pleaded with Mr. President to personally commission one or two of the roads in the satellite towns so residents can see and appreciate the transformation his administration is delivering,” he added.

Highlighting the scope of development under the Renewed Hope Agenda, Wike said his administration is ensuring that satellite towns are not left behind.

“We’ve said several times that we’re not concentrating in the cities. We’re also paying attention to the satellite towns. The total road length completed in the Ushafa area alone is not less than 12 kilometers. Yesterday, we were in Gwagwalada and Kwali, and you can see the same pattern of progress,” he noted.

He likened the satisfaction of completing these projects to passing an important exam with flying colors.

“It’s like going for an exam, you prepare, and you pass excellently. Naturally, you’d be very happy. We made promises, and to the glory of God, we’re fulfilling them,” Wike said.

The Minister also cited the recent upgrade of the International Conference Centre (ICC) as an example of President Tinubu’s directive to deliver world-class infrastructure to Nigerians.

He stressed that with improved roads, streetlights, and public facilities in satellite towns, the pressure on the city center will reduce as more people choose to live closer to home.

“From here to the city is just 35 minutes. Once the streetlights are done, this place will be completely transformed. People will no longer feel the need to move to the city when everything they need is provided right where they live,” Wike said.

He concluded by reiterating that the FCT Administration remains committed to bridging the urban-rural development gap through strategic investments across all districts.
