The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has firmly denied reports circulating in sections of the media regarding the purported appointments of Senator Ugochukwu Uba and Dr. Sadiq Abubakar Gombe as members of its National Working Committee (NWC), stating that neither individual is a registered member of the party.
Reports had earlier claimed that Senator Uba was appointed as the National Deputy Chairman (South) and Dr. Gombe as the Deputy National Chairman (North).
However, in swift and categorical responses, the party described the claims as unfounded, misleading, and an attempt to sow confusion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued by Chief Arinze Ekelem, the SDP’s National Vice Chairman (South East), the party debunked the alleged appointment of Senator Uba, stating that such a decision was never taken by the NWC.
“The South East zone of the Social Democratic Party categorically denies the false information that Senator Ugochukwu Uba has been appointed as National Deputy Chairman (South). The claim is baseless and does not reflect any resolution of the party,” Ekelem stated.
He added that Uba is not a card-carrying member of the SDP, and therefore ineligible for any leadership position within the party.
Ekelem noted that the NWC held a meeting on May 15, 2025, at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, and no such appointments were discussed or approved.
He called on party members and the general public to disregard the misinformation.
The South East zone also reaffirmed its loyalty to the party’s national leadership under Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, passing a vote of confidence in his leadership. Ekelem praised Gabam’s achievements, including electoral successes during the 2023 general elections, and assured continued support from the region in strengthening the party’s grassroots appeal.
Similarly, the Gombe State Chapter of the party discredited claims regarding the appointment of Dr. Sadiq Abubakar Gombe.
In a statement signed by Comrade Adamu Abubakar Modibbo, Acting State Chairman of the Gombe SDP, the chapter clarified that Dr. Gombe is not a registered member of the party, either at his ward in Jekadafari, Gombe LGA, or elsewhere.
“The claim that Dr. Sadiq Abubakar Gombe has been appointed Deputy National Chairman (North) is a fabrication and a political fraud. Our verification from the national secretariat confirms that such an appointment was never made,” Modibbo stated.
He described the claim as a “deliberate act of impersonation” and warned against attempts to hijack the party’s platform through deceptive means.
The statement reiterated the party’s commitment to upholding internal democracy and constitutional procedures and urged the public to ignore any representation made by or on behalf of Dr. Gombe.
Meanwhile, National Chairman of the SDP, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, has condemned the false claims, vowing to uncover the individuals behind the misinformation campaign. He described the development as a calculated attempt to destabilize the party ahead of the next general elections.
Gabam, however, expressed confidence in the party’s readiness for future polls, citing ongoing reforms and mobilisation as critical steps to reposition the SDP as a credible political platform for Nigerians seeking genuine democratic change.
