Prof. Nnonyelu Emerges Tops In UNIZIK Acting VC Nomination

Date:

A Professor of Sociology and Anthropology in the faculty of social sciences, Professor Nkemdilim Austin Nnonyelu has emerged tops in the nomination for acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, held on Thursday.

He polled 132 votes followed by Professor of Law and former acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi who polled 79 votes in the nomination by the university’s Senate.

Other contestants and their scores: were: Prof. Ada Sam-Omenyi – 63,

Prof. Ezinma Nnabuife – 22 and

Prof. Nkechi Esemonu – 09 votes.

However, Daily Independent leant that securing high votes does not automatically confer victory as the university council is saddled with the responsibility of making the appointment.

It will be recalled that at the expiration of Prof. Charles Okechukwu Esimone’s tenure as Vice Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu came in in acting capacity only to be shoved aside and Prof. Arinze Ume-Obi came in.

She was equally shoved aside when Prof. Benard Ifeanyi Odoh came in and he himself was removed for Joseph Ikechebelu to stage a come back as acting Vice Chancellor.

Now that Ikechebelu wants to be the substantive Vice Chancellor, he is stepping down in accordance with the policy guidelines of Federal Ministry of Education so that a non interested person for the office of the Vice Chancellor will come in in acting capacity.
