FG to Shut Ijora-Marine Bridge for 21 Days Over Urgent Repairs

Date:

The Federal Government has announced a 21-day partial and full closure of the Ijora-Marine Bridge in Lagos State beginning Sunday, May 18, 2025, to carry out urgent structural repairs.

This was disclosed in a statement on Tuesday by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, who stated that the repair works would commence at 7:00 a.m. and involve lifting sections of the bridge deck to replace worn-out bearings, along with other critical maintenance work.

While some sections of the bridge will be completely shut down, others will be partially accessible during the repair period. The repairs are aimed at improving safety and comfort for motorists and pedestrians using the strategic bridge.

“We understand the inconvenience this may cause, but this is a necessary step to keep the bridge in good condition and ensure the safety of all road users,” Kesha said.

To ease the anticipated disruption, traffic diversions have been planned and traffic officers will be deployed to manage vehicular flow and provide guidance to road users. Safety signs and traffic management equipment will also be installed to ensure a smooth transition throughout the maintenance period.

Kesha appealed to residents, commuters, and businesses around the Ijora axis to cooperate with traffic authorities and plan their movements ahead of time.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and thank members of the public for their patience,” she added.

The Ijora-Marine Bridge serves as a vital link between Lagos Island and the Apapa industrial district. The Federal Ministry of Works has emphasized the urgency of the repairs, citing long-term safety concerns.
