EFCC Grills Iyabo Ojo Over Currency Spraying at Daughter’s Wedding

Date:

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has questioned popular Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo, over alleged currency spraying during her daughter’s recent wedding ceremony.

Ojo, also known as the Queen Mother, revealed in an Instagram post on Tuesday that she honoured an official invitation from the anti-graft agency after returning from the United Kingdom. The actress appeared before EFCC officials on Monday, May 5, 2025, where she was interrogated about events at her daughter Priscilla Ojo’s wedding to Tanzanian singer, Juma Jux.

“I recently had an experience with the EFCC in Nigeria after receiving an invitation letter while I was in the UK. Upon my return, I visited the EFCC on May 5, where I was asked several questions relating to my personal bio-data, career, work experience, and companies,” she wrote.

According to Ojo, EFCC officials presented video footage from the wedding showing guests spraying both Naira and foreign currencies, a practice that falls under currency abuse as defined by Nigerian financial regulations.

“The EFCC officials showed me videos extracted from my daughter’s wedding where guests, including colleagues and friends, were spraying Naira and foreign currencies,” she added.

Ojo admitted that she had been unaware of the legal implications, stating that she believed only the mutilation of the Naira was an offense. She said she was surprised to learn that spraying foreign currencies, such as US Dollars, was also considered illegal.

“The EFCC officials clarified that spraying money, including on people’s bodies, is prohibited. I was surprised to learn that spraying any currency, including Dollars, is also not allowed,” she wrote.

In light of her experience, the actress advised Nigerians to refrain from spraying money at events to avoid violating financial laws and attracting the attention of law enforcement.

The EFCC has in recent times intensified its crackdown on currency abuse, particularly at lavish social events where money is often thrown or sprayed on celebrants in defiance of existing legal provisions.
