Abuja May Host AFN Elective Congress

Date:

The National Sports Commission (NSC) is considering moving the upcoming Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Elective Congress from Asaba, Delta State, to Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, following concerns over the fairness of the venue.

A source close to the NSC revealed that the sports governing body in Nigeria is not comfortable with the decision by certain individuals to host the congress in their home state, Delta, where the current AFN President, Tonobok Okowa, is seeking re-election.

“This arrangement by some individuals scheming to host their federation elective congress in their states won’t produce clear winners, and the NSC won’t go with it.

The election might be held in Abuja,” the source stated.

The NSC is reportedly determined to ensure a transparent and impartial process, and Abuja is seen as a neutral location for all candidates.

The report follows criticism of the AFN’s decision to hold the congress in Asaba, raising questions about the potential influence of Okowa’s hometown on the election’s outcome.

As the incumbent president, Okowa’s bid for re-election has sparked controversy, particularly in light of allegations of mismanagement and illegalities under his leadership.

The NSC has also expressed disapproval of the current guidelines being used by the AFN for the congress, asserting that the existing framework will not be acceptable.

Instead, the NSC will release new and proper guidelines for all sports federations to follow during the upcoming elections.
