OPay Launches ₦1.2B Scholarship for FUTMINNA Students Over 10 Years

Date:

In a major boost to Nigeria’s education sector, leading fintech company OPay has announced a ₦1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship initiative for students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA). The scholarship is designed to alleviate financial pressure and enable deserving students to focus fully on their academic pursuits.

The announcement was made during a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony held in Minna, attended by OPay executives and FUTMINNA officials, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Farouk Adamu Kuta. The initiative forms part of OPay’s nationwide effort to invest in the future of Nigerian youth through long-term educational support.

OPay’s Managing Director, Mr. Dauda Gotring, underscored the importance of the program, stating, “At OPay, we recognize the importance of education in nation-building. We are proud to support these students on their journey toward achieving greatness.”

A student who benefited from the program expressed heartfelt gratitude, sharing how financial challenges previously forced a withdrawal from university. “This scholarship is a lifeline,” the student said. “OPay’s support has helped me remain focused and hopeful.”

According to OPay, the scholarship initiative has already reached multiple universities across Nigeria, reinforcing the company’s commitment not just to financial inclusion, but to national development through education.

The company also announced that it has launched additional programs to alert users to digital scams and continues to win industry accolades, including being named “Most Innovative Fintech” at the 2025 Vanguard Awards.

Founded in 2018, OPay is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and insured by the NDIC, offering services ranging from money transfers to bill payments. With this new scholarship initiative, the company is positioning itself as a key partner in empowering Nigeria’s youth for a more inclusive future.
