Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has debunked widespread reports suggesting he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, Kyari described the rumours as “clear mischief” aimed at misinforming the public and distorting facts. He clarified that he is currently enjoying a much-needed rest following the recent dissolution of the NNPCL’s board and management.
“At present, I am taking a well-deserved rest after the dissolution of the management and board of the NNPCL,” he wrote. “It should be stated that having served the NNPC and NNPCL for 34 years, with nearly 18 years in management, I had little time for even a two-week leave.”
Kyari expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve under former President Muhammadu Buhari and current President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and accountability, noting his willingness to respond to any lawful queries regarding his stewardship.
“As a Muslim, I know I must give account either before man or before Allah. I am willing and happy to account for my public service,” he stated.
He further warned that the circulation of false information, especially regarding sensitive institutions like the NNPCL, could damage investor confidence and mislead the international community.
Kyari appealed to the media to exercise due diligence before publishing such stories, stressing the importance of responsible journalism.
His rebuttal follows days of speculation and viral social media posts alleging that he had been arrested by the EFCC in connection with alleged financial misconduct.
Efforts to get a formal statement from the EFCC regarding the alleged arrest had not yielded any official comment as of press time.
