Okon Blazes to 9.91s at LSU Invitational, becomes Second Fastest in NCAA This Year

Date:

Nigerian sprinter Sunday Israel Okon lit up the track at the LSU Invitational, clocking a blistering 9.91 seconds (+2.9 m/s wind) in the men’s 100m — the fastest all-conditions time of his career and the second-fastest performance in the NCAA this season.

Racing in favorable but wind-aided conditions, the collegiate standout surged ahead of a competitive field that included Jaden Wiley, who finished second in 10.12s, and Micah Larry, who was third in 10.15 seconds.

Olympic finalist Joseph Fahnbulleh placed fifth with a respectable 10.18 seconds.

Though the wind reading of +2.9 m/s exceeds the legal limit for record purposes (+2.0), Okon’s time reinforces his growing reputation as one of the NCAA’s top sprinters and a major contender for the upcoming NCAA Championships.

With the post-season fast approaching, Okon’s performance sends a clear message to his rivals — he’s peaking at just the right time.

National 200m Champion, Sunday Israel Okon will attend University of Auburn for his freshman year.

Recall, Okon enjoyed a lot of success in 2024, including winning gold medal as lead-off on Nigeria’s 4x100m quartet at the African Games.

He set multiple personal bests all through the course of last season, finishing off with a 10.12 seconds and an appearance for Nigeria at the World U20 Championships where he won his heat but bowed out due to injury.
