Calls for former President Goodluck Jonathan to join the political race ahead of the 2027 general elections intensified with the Nigeria Rescue Mission Organisation urging him to contest against incumbent President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking in Lagos, the organisation’s President, Jibril Mustapha, appealed to Jonathan to “answer the call to serve again,” citing the country’s worsening economic conditions, insecurity, unemployment, and banditry as reasons Nigeria needs experienced and unifying leadership.
“Nigeria stands at a crucial crossroads,” Mustapha said.
“Only a unifying figure with proven governance experience can restore stability and foster national progress.”
According to him, Jonathan’s previous administration promoted democratic values, prioritised citizens’ welfare, and maintained a governance style that encouraged national unity.
“As the nation prepares for the 2027 elections, the Nigeria Rescue Mission Organisation believes that now is the time for all stakeholders to come together and support a candidate who can genuinely represent the interests of all Nigerians,” Mustapha added.
While Jonathan has yet to make any formal declaration about his 2027 political ambitions, observers say endorsements like this may pressure him to reconsider his role in national politics.
Since losing to Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, Jonathan has largely withdrawn from partisan politics and assumed the role of an elder statesman, often involved in peace missions and diplomatic engagements.
Meanwhile, legal concerns about his eligibility to run have been addressed.
In 2022, a Federal High Court in Bayelsa ruled that Jonathan is constitutionally qualified to contest again, since his first term in 2010 did not constitute an elected tenure.
Jonathan has remained silent on the matter, but with the growing endorsements and national calls for experienced leadership, political analysts believe his potential candidacy could reshape the 2027 political landscape.
