Court Sentences BRT Driver to Death for Murder of 22-Year-Old Bamise

Date:

The Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square annex on Friday sentenced Andrew Nice Ominikoron, a former Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, to death by hanging for the murder of 22-year-old Ayanwola Oluwabamise.

Justice Sherifat Sonaike delivered the judgment after finding Ominikoron guilty of the murder, as well as the sexual assault of another victim, Dr. Anosike Victoria. The judge described the acts as “heinous, premeditated, and deserving of the full weight of the law.”

The convict had faced a five-count charge brought against him by the Lagos State Government, including murder, conspiracy to murder, rape, and sexual assault. The charges stemmed from the tragic events surrounding Bamise’s death, as well as separate allegations of rape involving one Maryland Ojiezelu and the sexual assault of Dr. Victoria.

Despite pleading not guilty to all charges, Ominikoron was found culpable after the prosecution presented substantial evidence and witness testimonies that proved beyond reasonable doubt his involvement in the crimes.

The case sparked widespread public outrage and renewed calls for improved passenger safety on public transportation in Lagos State. Bamise, a fashion designer, was reported missing in February 2022 after boarding a BRT bus driven by Ominikoron. Her body was later found, prompting an investigation that led to the driver’s arrest.

In addition to the death sentence for murder, Ominikoron received separate sentences for the sexual offences, which the court ordered to run concurrently.

The judgment marks a significant moment in the legal proceedings that have drawn nationwide attention and criticism over the safety of women in public spaces.

Justice Sonaike noted during sentencing that the verdict should serve as a deterrent to others and a measure of justice for the victims and their families.
