The Lagos State Police Command has provided clarification regarding the recent arrest of Alabi Quadri, the young man who rose to prominence during the 2023 presidential election after a viral moment in which he stood in front of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s convoy.
In a statement released via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that Quadri was apprehended in connection with a violent street clash in the Amukoko area of Lagos on January 22, 2025.
According to Hundeyin, the incident involved rival groups of youths who engaged in violent confrontations that disrupted public peace and led to widespread panic, destruction of property, and assaults on innocent residents.
“On January 22, 2025, a serious breach of public peace and extensive damage to public and private properties occurred in Amukoko when groups of youths engaged in violent confrontations,” Hundeyin said.
The police spokesperson noted that investigations were launched immediately, during which victims and community members identified several suspects, including Quadri. Statements collected from eyewitnesses and robbery victims allegedly linked him and four others to the disturbance.
Following their arrest, the suspects were arraigned in court and remanded to a correctional facility, pending the conclusion of legal proceedings.
“All police actions taken in this case have followed laid-down processes and due legal procedures based on credible evidence gathered during the investigation,” Hundeyin emphasized.
He also urged the public to remain calm and allow the judicial process to run its full course, assuring that the Command remains committed to transparency, fairness, and the rule of law.
The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of the police’s openness to dialogue with stakeholders and members of the public, to ensure continued trust and accountability.
