The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed that gunmen attacked the family home of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP-Kogi Central) in Obeiba Community, Okehi Local Government Area, on Tuesday night. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Miller Dantawaye, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday, stating that an investigation had been launched into the matter.
“The command has been fully briefed on the unfortunate and criminal incident by the Okehi LGA Divisional Police Officer. So far, no arrest has been made. Investigation into the incident has begun, and we will get to the root of it,” said Dantawaye. He assured that those responsible for the attack would be brought to justice.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan explained that the gunmen targeted her family’s house under the assumption that she was present in town. However, the attackers were confronted by security operatives and local community members, who responded swiftly and forced them to flee the scene. Thankfully, no one was harmed in the incident. The senator confirmed that a report was immediately filed with the local police area command.
In a statement issued by Akpoti-Uduaghan’s media team, the attack was described as a deliberate attempt to intimidate the senator. The statement condemned the assault on the family residence and called for immediate action to ensure the safety of the senator.
“We urge the Inspector-General of Police to reinstate her security details for safety, considering this heinous attack. This calculated act of violence is an attempt to silence the senator, whose dedication to serving her constituents and speaking the truth should not be met with intimidation,” the statement read.
The senator also urged the public to remain calm, stressing that such violent acts should not deter her commitment to representing the people of Kogi Central Senatorial District.
As the investigation continues, authorities have vowed to uncover the perpetrators behind the attack and ensure the safety of public officials in the region.
