Reps C’ttee Invite Rivers Sole Administrator Over Emergency Rule

The House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Rivers State Oversight has invited the state’s Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), for an interactive session slated for Thursday, April 17, 2025.

This move comes in the wake of the declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State and forms part of the House’s legislative efforts to closely monitor the unfolding situation.

The Committee, chaired by House Leader Hon. (Prof.) Julius Ihonvbere, OON, was constituted on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, by Speaker Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, During its inaugural meeting held at the National Assembly Complex, members examined preliminary reports and discussed the evolving political and security landscape in the state.

Citing its oversight powers under Section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Committee resolved to invite Vice Admiral Ibas to shed light on governance operations and the security conditions since his appointment as Sole Administrator.

Prof. Ihonvbere emphasized that the session is critical for the House to discharge its duties effectively, noting, “This engagement will enable us to carry out our constitutional responsibilities with the seriousness and objectivity the situation demands. The national interest must come first.”

Also speaking on the development, House Spokesman Hon. Akin Rotimi, Jr. described the meeting as “a vital step toward ensuring transparency and accountability in the administration of Rivers State during this period of emergency rule.”

According to the House, the meeting is scheduled to hold at 4:00 PM in Room 414 of the House of Representatives New Building, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

The Committee confirmed that a formal letter of invitation had been sent to and acknowledged by the Sole Administrator, underscoring the commitment of the House to due process and open governance.

Assuring Nigerians of its dedication, the Committee pledged to uphold integrity and legality in all proceedings, reiterating that the people of Rivers State and the Nigerian nation remain central to its work.
