Controversial Nigerian singer, Okikiola Badmus, popularly known as Portable, has been remanded in the Oke Kura Correctional Centre in Ilorin, Kwara State, after he failed to meet the stringent bail conditions set by an Upper Area Court in the state.
Portable, who appeared in court on Monday to face charges of defamation of character brought against him by veteran Fuji musician Saheed Osupa, was granted bail of N1 million. However, he was unable to fulfill additional bail requirements, which included providing two sureties, each with a similar sum.
One of the sureties was required to be either the Chairman or Secretary of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), while the other had to be a property owner within a Government Reserved Area in Ilorin, with proof of ownership through a valid Certificate of Occupancy.
The singer, known for his hit song Zazoo Zeh, was escorted out of court following the remand order after it became clear that he could not meet these conditions.
The defamation suit, filed by Saheed Osupa, accuses Portable of making defamatory statements that tarnished the veteran musician’s reputation. The legal proceedings have attracted public attention, given the high-profile nature of both the accuser and the accused.
Related reports indicate that Portable has faced several controversies in the past, with the recent charges adding to his ongoing legal troubles.
As the case progresses, it remains to be seen when Portable will be able to fulfill the bail conditions or whether further legal actions will follow.
