NSCDC Arrests 7, Seals Oil Dumps in Crackdown on Petroleum Smuggling

Date:

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed the arrest of seven individuals for their alleged involvement in illegal dealings in petroleum products.

In a post shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, April 11, the Corps disclosed that the arrests were made by the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad during a recent operation targeting petroleum smuggling networks.

The statement further revealed that five suspected illegal oil storage facilities, commonly referred to as “oil dumps,” were sealed off during the operation. In addition, several trucks suspected to be transporting petroleum products of dubious origin were impounded.

“Continuous Fight Against Illegal Dealings in Petroleum Products: NSCDC Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad arrests seven suspects, seals five suspected illegal oil dumps, and impounds several trucks laden with suspected petroleum products,” the NSCDC stated via its social media platform.

The crackdown is part of ongoing efforts by the NSCDC to curb petroleum smuggling and other economic sabotage activities threatening Nigeria’s energy security and economy.

While the agency has not yet disclosed the specific locations of the arrests or identities of the suspects, it assured the public that investigations are ongoing and those found culpable will be prosecuted accordingly.

This development comes amid heightened efforts by security agencies and regulatory bodies to combat the illegal distribution and trade of petroleum products, which has led to significant revenue losses for the federal government.

The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to protecting national assets and warned individuals or groups involved in illegal oil operations to desist or face the full weight of the law.
