UI Twins Make History, Bag First-Class Degrees with Identical 3.94 CGPA

Date:

In an extraordinary academic achievement, twin brothers, Matthew and Matthias Busoye, have graduated with identical first-class honours from the University of Ibadan, topping not only their department but also the entire Faculty of Technology.

The duo, who studied Electronic and Electrical Engineering, both earned a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.94 out of 4.00, the highest in their department and faculty for the 2023/2024 academic session.

The remarkable feat was announced via social media on Wednesday, with Matthias sharing highlights of their academic journey, which included consistently stellar results. At 100 level, they had CGPAs of 3.84 and 3.89 respectively, and by their final year, they had matched at 3.94.

“This still feels surreal,” Matthew posted on X. “My brother and I standing here today isn’t a reflection of being the most deserving or most diligent students; far from it. But for some reason, we are here.”

Matthew also had the honour of delivering the induction speech as Best Graduating Student of the Faculty, where he offered words of encouragement to students striving through academic and personal challenges.

The Society of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Students (SEEES-UI) formally recognized the brothers as the overall best graduating students, lauding their academic excellence and leadership.

Beyond academics, both brothers held notable leadership positions on campus. Matthias served as Speaker of the 11th Assembly of the UI Students’ Representative Council, while Matthew led as President of SEEES-UI during the session.

Photos and videos from the graduation ceremony have since gone viral, especially one heartwarming image of their mother praying over them — a moment many described as “inspiring” and “deeply emotional.”

Their achievement adds to the growing list of exceptional student stories coming out of Nigeria’s premier university and has been widely celebrated as a beacon of hope for academic excellence in the country.
