The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has raised the alarm over Nigeria’s worsening economic and social conditions, declaring that the country is on the brink of collapse.
Obi made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing party members during the Labour Party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja.
According to him, the rising poverty levels and declining living standards among citizens reflect a nation in crisis.
“Nigeria is collapsing. The numbers are clear; the indices are clear—people are getting poorer every day,” Obi said.
“We must speak out when things are going wrong.”
He also urged party members not to be intimidated by political pressures, stating, “Do not fear anybody. Those who were afraid yesterday didn’t do any better.”
In his address, Obi emphasised the importance of unity and inclusion within the Labour Party, describing it as a political family open to all.
“It’s not about Peter Obi’s choice; it’s everyone’s choice. This family excludes no one. We want to build a party that is fair and just.”
Looking ahead to future elections, Obi stated the party is determined to present strong, qualified candidates across all levels.
“We want to go into the next election fully prepared, offering Nigerians the best and most competent candidates for the House of Representatives, the Senate, Governorships, and the Presidency,” he said.
He also addressed internal concerns about party discipline and candidate selection, noting that past mistakes must not be repeated.
“Anyone seeking to contest under our party must be a committed member, not just someone passing through. They must be competent.”
Obi’s remarks come amid growing public discontent over inflation, insecurity, and economic instability. His comments echoed recent sentiments expressed by citizens and civic groups calling for reforms and transparency at all levels of governance.
