Oba Owoade: My Emergence as Alaafin Was Divine, Not Political

Date:

The newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has declared that his emergence as the 46th Alaafin was divinely orchestrated, stating categorically that he had no prior connections with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, or former Senator Monsurat Sunmonu.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service held at the Anglican Cathedral Church, Esiele, Oyo Town on Sunday, the monarch emphasized that his ascension to the revered throne was not politically motivated but guided by divine will.

“I never knew nor met both the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, before and during the process to the throne,” Oba Owoade said. “I was neither desperate nor cutting corners to become the Alaafin. It was the will of God.”

The statement was made public by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, on Monday in Ibadan.

Oba Owoade officially received the staff and instrument of office from Governor Makinde on January 13, 2025, following the passing of the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi. The new monarch completed the traditional Oro Ipebi rites on March 29.

In a show of magnanimity, the monarch extended a hand of fellowship to his former contenders for the throne, calling for unity in the development of the ancient city. “Let us remember that united we stand and divided we fall,” he said.

Reaffirming his commitment to transparent and impactful leadership, Oba Owoade assured the people of Oyo of his dedication to their welfare and development. He pledged to uphold justice, ethical governance, and a peaceful atmosphere for growth.

Delivering the sermon at the thanksgiving service, the former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Supo Ayokunle, likened Oba Owoade’s rise to that of biblical King David, describing him as “a divinely ordained paramount ruler.”

“Kabiyesi, do not think that you are alone on the throne,” Rev. Ayokunle said. “Be courageous, steadfast, and committed. God is standing by you to lead your people right.”

He urged the monarch to lean on divine wisdom and courage to overcome challenges and lead Oyo and the Yoruba people to prominence.

The thanksgiving service was attended by Oba Owoade’s wife, Abiwunmi; members of the Oyo Traditional Council (Oyo Mesi); the Samu; the Agba Akin; the Baba Iyaji of Oyo; elevated Baales; and members of the Owoade royal family.

A key highlight of the event was the presentation of a customised Holy Bible to the monarch, symbolising his spiritual mandate and commitment to divine guidance throughout his reign.
