Police Warn Against “Take It Back” Protest on National Police Day

Date:

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong caution to members of the public regarding a planned nationwide protest organised by the “Take It Back Movement,” set to take place on Monday, which coincides with the newly designated National Police Day.

In a statement released on Sunday, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, acknowledged the constitutional right of Nigerians to engage in peaceful demonstrations but described the timing of the proposed protest as “ill-timed,” “mischievous,” and “questionable.”

According to Adejobi, the planned protest, scheduled to occur across various states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), clashes with the federal government’s inaugural celebration of National Police Day—a day intended to honour the sacrifices and contributions of police personnel nationwide.

“The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is, however, questionable and perceived to be a deliberate attempt and unpatriotic act that is capable of rubbishing and maligning the image of the Nigeria Police and the nation as a whole,” the police spokesperson stated.

He further noted that the National Police Day will host high-profile dignitaries, including foreign Inspector-Generals of Police, diplomats, and other influential figures. The police view the coinciding protest as a threat to the integrity and decorum of the event.

While reiterating the NPF’s commitment to upholding democratic freedoms, the statement urged protesters to consider the sensitive timing and the broader implications of their actions.

The “Take It Back Movement” has yet to formally respond to the police’s concerns at the time of filing this report.
